Hey this is Mark Dauner and I created the Content Adventures of Super Space Robot to have a little fun with a topic that I think should be fun: creating great content.

Today’s adventure, which is the first Super Space Robot audio play, introduces our “hero” (term used somewhat loosely) as he intrudes upon a guy named Peter in his home office! Hopefully he was wearing pants. Peter is having some trouble figuring out how to differentiate between what should go on the blog, and what should be saved for his newsletter. Hijinks ensue.

Super Space Robot gives Peter some advice that I have seen content creators enact with success, which includes repurposing existing content for the blog (and maybe writing just a little bit initially), then focusing on creating great original content for the newsletter. There is a twist at the end, which is where the time savings is found, so don’t stop listening, no matter how much you want to!

I've had a pretty long career in marketing, and over my career, I've picked up a lot of tips, tricks, and tactics for digital content creation and content marketing. Some of the tactics you hear about on this podcast may be fairly common. Some may not be. I'm sharing tactics like this because I think they might work for you too. One mistake I've made in my marketing career is just automating the newsletter - sending out links to existing content that is already on the website. That can work in some cases. To me though, your newsletter should be a special place. Almost like a VIP area. Those behind that velvet rope - your subscribers - should get a little something extra for giving you their name and email address. It should be a place people want to go; something they look forward to receiving in their inbox.

With that said, it shouldn’t take you forever to get all of this done. Repurposing content is a big part of what makes this tactic work. There’s some prep work up front, as is the case with most efficiency tactics. It will get easier and easier once the system is up and running.

You know what else? This tactic works for more than just for differentiating blog posts and newsletters. It can work to lead your audience from wherever they find you to wherever you want to lead them. Blog to newsletter is the most common, but you could use this with content differentiation in social media channels, podcasts, and virtually anywhere else.
